BATTLE-CHECKERS INTRIGUE LOVELIF
CHICAGO, ILL.wPIXPAGEBattle-checkers, the new beat-the-Axis
game, is keeping everyone home these nights, including these lovelies
from the cast of a hit show here. The new game is played with minia-
ture infantrymen, anti-aircraft guns, planes, subs, and battleships.
"Kings" are bombers which can jump an tile way across the board. It
was invented by an ex-chess champion who said it should use up the
energies of armchair strategists and keep them criticizing each other
instead of the generals. The girls are left to right: Mary Ellen Popel,
Marlo Dwyer, and Gayle Mellott•
Christmas Play
To Be Repeated
In Connecticut
This year marks the 31st free per-
formance of the pageant, "Holy
Night"--the first having been in
1912. A family affair, three mem-
bers of the original cast. besides
sons and grandsons of others, are
*taking part in the 1942 performance.
The villagers don't take their act-
lag, and the play itself, in a light,
or casual manner. Even though it
takes but one hour. the play is re-
'hearsed over and over again, year
:after year. The first rehearsals be-
gin just after Thanksgiving when
costumes are taken from the attic,
and players begin to drop around
in the evenings.
PRAYER FOR VICTORY
By Edgar A. Guest
If the day's business finds a lull
Swiftly that precious moment cull
And dedicate it, there and then,
In prayer for all our fighting men.
If but one instant can .be torn
From all the cares which must be
borne
Seize it, no matter when or where
And for their safety breathe a
prayer.
If between task and task there lies
A brief release from enterprise
Seize the swift seconds while you
may,
And use them silently to pray.
From dawn to dusk, late night or
noon,
Santa's Helpers
These two youngsters, like thou-
sands of others, are doing their part
in helping the Red Cross be Santa

FOUNDATION OF FREEDOM
Most people think of war indus-
tries as those which actually turn
out the finished products. But in
reality, the plane, tank, ship and
gun factories are the vital middle
men in a production chain that
starts deep in our coal and metal
mines, our forests, and in our vast
oil fields where the pumps and re-
fining plants work day and night to
furnish lubrication and fuel by the
billions of gallons to keep the
wheels of industry and of war
turning.
Natural resources are the key to
victory. This country has those
resources. Moreover, under efficient
management, they are imparting
raw materials in quantities that
stagger the imagination. The gen-
ius of the men who operate the nat-
ural resource industries, is second
only to the greatness of the re-
sources themselves. Together, they
are an unbeatable combination. In
the peace to come, they will be the
starting point of a new world, just
as they are now the starting point
of our entire war effort. When the
last shot has been fired, our basic
industries, like free enterprise in all
other fields, will turn again to the
sole task of creating a fuller, more
conffortable life for all.
That is why we must preserve
free enterprise. It is the key to
a better civilization. It guarantees
both political and economic freedom
to the individual. And the natural
resource industries are the founda-
tion of our existence as a sovereign,
nation.
Apparently railroaders, who are
asking for an increase of $3 a day,
haven't heard of the wage-freezing
order.
