Contracts in sports and golfing with the coach Sip sl
Hello,
I suppose most of you in Bison
country are aware that the coach of
the Thundering Herd, the Bison of
NDSU, has announced he is leav-
ing for Wyoming. I understand he
is a great coach, and has done a
tremendous job of elevating the
Bison to national prominence in
college football.
But what I don't understand is
why contracts aren't honored in
sports. And since I am a heck of an
athlete, maybe that is why I don't
understand. If you plan on leaving
anyway, why negotiate a contract.
I know I am in the minority on
this, but I would have said, "Good-
bye. Thank you for all you have
done. And you can watch the
championship game on ESPN from
a motel room in Laramie." But
then that's just me.
It's a far cry from the way Fred
Fridley Sr. handled his stint at Wat-
ford City. As head coach for 42
years, he was several times coach
of the year in North Dakota, and
one time National High School
Coach of the Year. He could have
left Watford at any time for more
money and more prestige. But he
became a Wolf. And he stayed a
Watford City Wolf. I think that was

a touch of class that most coaches
and most pro athletes do not have.
I'm not sure if I told you that I
kind of coached Fred in golf. You
see, Fred and I were golf partners
in league golf for a number of
years. I coached him well. He gave
me a stroke a hole and two on the
par 5's. Then we played pretty
even.
But as many of you know, and I
wrote about it several years ago,
Foundation OKs largest grant pro!
The North Dakota Newspaper As-
sociation Education Foundation
(NDNAEF) has approved its largest
grant program ever, allocating
$33,000 to educational programs.
The grant lineup includes two new
programs. One is a program to en-
courage and assist North Dakota high
schools in establishing or enhancing
journalism programs. The second is
a marketing campaign to combat the
perception that newspapers are
dying.
The program also is heavy on
funding internships at North Dakota
newspapers, and providing continu-
ing education seminars for working
journalists.
One of the goals of the foundation
is to encourage young people to con-
sider careers in journalism, according
to foundation Secretary Steve An-
drist, executive director of the North
Dakota Newspaper Association
(NDNA).
In addition, the foundation is fo-
cusing on spreading the word, docu-
mented in a variety of national

continue to have strong readership
despite the proliferation of social and
mobile media.
Grants approved by the NDNAEF
board include:
$10,000 for summer college stu-
dent internships at North Dakota
newspapers.
$10,000 for continuing educa-
tion workshops.
$2,500 for high school students

Fred and I are both deaf. You
know. Like "What'd you say?"
Our conversations during a
round of golf would go something
like, "How are the cattle doing?"
And I would rely, "I bought Will a
saddle for his birthday."
Fred. "What'd you get on that
hole?"
Me. "I filled the cart last week.
It's your turn."
Me. "How are the boys doing?"
Fred. "I think it's about 150
yards."
Me. "Did you tell Betty Ann
we're gong to Dickinson to golf?"
Fred. "They are having a golf
tourney in Dickinson. We should
go."
Me. "That wind is coming up.
Think it's going to blow up a
rain?"
Fred. "The train doesn't come
through here anymore. Hasn't for
years."
Me. "I don't know. Sometimes
you can get eyedrops that help."
And so it would go. But I will
tell you one thing. If you owed him
seven dollars at the end of the
round, and you said you owed him
six, he could damn sure hear!
Congratulations Partner! Enjoy!

"The mocha frappe sounds inter-
esting," my 15-year-old daughter
said as we stood at the restaurant
counter. She went to find a booth.
I admit I was a little preoccupied
thinking about the day's tasks. I
heard "mocha" and figured she
wanted her usual hot mocha drink
on a cold day.
I arrived at the booth and distrib-
uted the beverages and food to my
family. My daughter tasted her drink
and announced with surprise: "It's
hot!"
"You really wanted an icy drink
on the coldest day so far this year?"
I replied.
My husband looked at me as
though I had dropped off her dog at
the pound.
"Oh, this will be OK," she said.
She looked at me with puppy-dog
eyes just as her dog does when he
wants a treat. I wasn't keen on
spending $4 on another beverage.
She decided she wanted a snack,
so my husband went to buy it and
returned with the snack and a mocha
frappe. Dads like to "spoil" their
daughters, I guess.
She proceeded to alternately
drink her hot and cold mocha. I
sipped my economical, calorie-free
cup of coffee. I'm not a teen any-
more by a long shot. I'd be buying
larger-sized jeans next week if I
drank all those calories.
My husband and daughter flipped
over the tray liner and began read-
ing the calories.
"Wow!" they said as their eyes
widened. My teen was going to be
wired with energy. The small, cold
mocha had 450 calories and the
small, hot mocha had 330 calories.
The restaurant didn't list the caf-
feine content.
Fortunately, she drank half of
each beverage and put the rest in the
fridge at home for the next day.
Beverages choices can make a
major difference in our daily diet.
