BOTTINEAU Each holiday
season, shoppers find themselves
confronted with a choice: cele-
brate with a real tree or an artificial
tree.
Real Christmas trees are a bene-
fit to the environment from the time
they are planted until after the holi-
day season, aclzording to Glenda E.
Fauske. coordinator of information
and education for the North Dakota
Forest Service. While they're grow-
ing on farms, real Christmas trees
stabilize soil. protect water sup-
plies, provide widllife habitat.
absorb carbon dioxide, and create
green scenery. Often. Christmas
trees are grown on soil that doesn't
support other crops. Real u'ees can
also be reused and recycled after the
holidays.
Artificial trees are a petroleum-
based product that consumes energy
resources during fabrication. A bur-
den to the environment, artificial
trees aren't biodegradable and will
remain m landfills for centuries
after disposal.
The average life span of an arti-
ficial tree is only six years.
