"Proof" in the Shooting
Illl
One boy lies wounded in a New Jersey hospital and
another waits in the hands of police because their aca-
demic discussion of war strategy waxed so warm that they
...... put their theories to practical test. Foolish children~to
take rifles and shoot at each other over a disagreement
about military technique.
Nations are wiser. Now and then, it must be admitted
a man or two is shot or o~herwise injured in tllose war
games ir~ which the military arm is exercised at putting
the academics of warfare into practice. But these shoot-
ings are only accidental. The deliberate wounding and
killing of men is not intended merely to test theories or
clinch arguments about military campaigning; it is em-
ployed in attempts to settle ranch more important ques-
tions--questions of justice and honor.
Or are nations wiser ? When the war clouds roII away
it is of course seen that the deploying of men and the
~hooting of them l iave answered chiefly the question as
to what military tactics are most effective, which is the
quests.on the Z,vo boys did intend to settle. Ar least the
boys did not s,u~)t at e~ch other to prove which of their
families paid its bills the more prompt!y, kept the better
