We were shocked and saddened
to hear of the death of Senate
Majority Leader Bob Stenehjem,
He was a dedicated public servant
that had served as Majority Leader
tbr over a decade. Every day during
the legislative session he always
made it a point to stop bY my desk
early in the morning. He always
said the same thing.., "What's hap-
pening today?" It became just a
routine, but one I will miss."
The State Department of
Transportation continues to struggle
with Highway 22. Just when they
thought they had a bypass ready to
go, the rest of the highway shifted,
cracked, and they were back at
square one. Engineers are going to
be called in to do bore tests to see if
they can find some solid ground that
will hold up to the heavy oil traffic.
We should have more results in a
week or so to determine where the
new highway has to go, and how
much it is going to cost for the
repairs.
We have seen disaster after dis-
aster hit the state this year starting
out with a horrific winter flowed by
a May I st blizzard; then the flood-
ing started in Bismarck, Mandan,
and then Minot. Now we are deal-
ing with cattle killing heat waves.

The State of North Dakota has sev-
eral programs to provide emergency
funding in response to disasters,
including this year's major flooding.
State Disaster Relief Fund: This
fund helps cover state and local
costs associated with presidentially-
declared disasters in the state. The
legislature has appropriated $35.5
for disaster relief. These funds can
be used to match federal funds.
State funds can be leveraged with
three to nine times the amount in
federal funds.

We are going to need a tremen- Dave Knapl

repairing our roads. These pro-
grams we have approved should Kathy Ferde
help the situation, but I don't think
anyone realized the magnitude of
the disasters we would be facing
this summer. The special session is Mary Gange
coming up in November, and maybe
we can start addressing some of
these issues.
