Iza Doering
STURGIS. S.D. - Iza Doering,
99. died Monday, July 6. 2009. at
the Sturgis Regional Hospital. She
was born Oct. 5. 1909. to Carl G.
and Elizabeth Gunkel. pioneer
ranchers, at the family ranch 23
miles southwest of Belfield.
Iza was one of seven children.
two boys and five girls. She attend-
ed school through the eight grade in
a one-room country schoolhouse,
She graduated from Belfield High
School. After graduation she
attended Dickinson State Normal
School in Dickinson and finished
with a teaching certificate. She
mueht school in rural, one-room
schoolhouses in Billings County
from 1930 to 1935 Her daily trans-
portation to and from school was bv
horseback: during her teaching
years she never had a car,
She married Herbert V. Doering
St. on Dec. 27. 1934. in Wibaux.
Mont. After the maniage she went
back to teaching at Matteson
School until school let out in the
spring of 1935. She lived in North
Dakota until early 1942 when she
moved with her family to Wendell.
Idaho. flr the building of a
Japanese internment, camp, Camp
Minidoka. She staved there until
the camp was completed in early
September 1942. The family
moved to Sturgis, S.D.. in October
1942. where her husband worked
for the McMahon Company. a feed.
seed and grain elevator in Sturgis.
The) bought a nice brick house at
837 Dudley Street. where she lived
for over 60 years.
She worked at Dodson's
Grocery from 1968 until it closed in
1978. She then worked at the
Sturgis Senior Citizens center as
hostess from 1)78 until 1995. In
2(t02. she moved to the Key City
Retirement home. She is a long-
time member of the First
Presbyterian Church of Sturgis.
She has been an active member of
the Rebekah Lodge # 36 and the
VFW Auxiliary. Iza has been a
great friend to many people over
the years: her kind and easy listen-
ing approach along with her will-
ingness to give advice in privacy
were her most endearing charms.
All four of her children complet-
ed elementary and 'g'h school in
Sturgis. [za had children in the
Sturgis Public School system for 32

Visitfltion was held on Thursday
from noon until 9 p.m. at Kinkade
Funeral Chapel. Funeral services
were held on Friday, July t0. at 10
a.m. at the First Presbyterian
Church with the Rev. Denzet
Nonhof officiating. Burial fol-
lowed at Bear Butte Cemetery. A
memorial has been established to
the Sturgis Senior Citizens' Center.

Donald R. Guenther
STEVENSVILLE. Mont.
Donald R. Guenther. 85. of
Stevensville. Mont.. died at
Communit) Medical Center on
Tuesday, July 7. 2009.
Don was born on Oct. 20, 1923.
at Terry. Mont.. to Edward and
Pearl (Hickman) Guenther. His
early years were spent on the fami-
ly ranch outside of Terry. He
always said that he had the first RV:
it was a sheep wagon! He and his
brother herded the family bands of
sheep during the summer months.
He graduated from Terry High
School in 1942 and enlisted in the
U.S. Army Paratroopers during
WWII. Following his discharge he
farmed for a number of years at
Beach. and also worked for the
Farmers Union. now known as
Cenex. He moved to Missoula and
started the Cenex Propane Plant.
where he was employed until his
retirement.
He married Erma Slocomb in
1948 and continued to farm in
Beach. They later divorced. Don
Was active m many civic organiza-
tions during "the years including:
school boards.
4-H. Lions. and was a 42-year
member of the American Legion.
Music was his passion and he was a
charter member of the Montana
State Fiddlers and the Five Valley
Accordion Association. He was
well known during the years that
Fort Owen Inn was open, playing
with the Burnt Fork Trio. A day
without music was a day lost for
him. He loved his fiddle, guitar and
banjo. He shared his music with
many and his music was a universal
language wherever he went.
In 1985. he married the love of
his life and best friend. Cleo Moran.
They shared their love of music, trav-
el and farming. He was a most con-
scientious caretaker of his animals
and he especially loved his little dog,
Tessie. who will miss the curve of his
arm in which to sleep. Don cared
deeply for his family, including his
stepchildren. Every friend was a spe-
cial person to him and he had many.
He shared his knowledge of farming
and shop work with anyone needing
help who stopped by his shop. He so
enjoyed restoring old tractors and
was a member of the Tired Iron
Antique Tractor Club_ He also was a
member of the Stevensville United
Methodist Church.

His five brothers and two sisters
preceded him.
He is survived by his wife Cteo
of Stevensville; son Charles (Mary
Lynn) Guenther. Yakima. Wash.:
his daughters. Diane (Mike)
Bingeman. Beach: and Donna
Guenther, Billings, Mont. His step-
sons who were like his own:
Douglas Moran and step-grandson,
Nickolas Moran of Billings;
Rodney (Debbie) Moran. Spokane:
and Scott (Lisa) Moran. Renton.
Wash.: brother and sister-in-law
Buck and Myrna Varner. Victor.
Mont.: 10 grandchildren and 15
great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are his sisters:
Doris (Robert) Erny, Port Angeles,
Wash.. and Betty Hatch. His fami-
ly meant a lot to him and he cher-
ished the time spent with them.
Funeral Services were held on
Saturday. July 11. at 2 p.m. at the
United Methodist Church. 216
College Ave.. Stevensville. with
Pastor Nancy Slabaugh-Hart offici-
ating. Burial was at the Sunnyside
Cemetery on Three Mile Creek
Road. with a reception following
across the road at the Guenther
Ranch.

Final Culbertson
permit issued
CULBERTSON. Mont. The
last permit pending for construction
of the

Culbertson Generation Station has
been issued.
The permit issued from the Rural
Utilities Service (RUS) called
FONSI - finding of no significant
impact - addressed any environ-
mental impacts that may be caused
from construction and operation of
the station.
Construction of the peaking sta-
uon near Culbertson. Mont., began
June 29. The power plant will be

in Electric's lirst in the state of
Montana.
Project Coordinator Dick
Shaffer said the peaking facility
will be a 95-megawatt capacity,
natural gas-fueled peaking station.
University of
Area residents are among 666
students named to the spring
semester Dean's List at the
University of Mary in Bismarck.
This number includes students in
U-Mary's undergraduate program
and in the School of Accelerated
and Distance Education.
To qualify for the honor, tradi-
tional undergraduate students must
earn a 3.50 or better grade point
average while carrying at least 12
Shaffer said it will feature the
General Electric LMS100 tur-
bine/generator, the same tur-
bine/generator that's in operathon
at Basin Electric's Groton
Generation Station. near Groton.

"The turbine is in Houston
(Texas) and the generator is being
stored near the plant site. Both will
be ready for delivery as soon as the
concrete foundations have been
constructed." he said.
An air permit to construct was
issued by the Montana Department
of Environmental Quality for the
Culbertson Generation Station on
Jan. 21. 2009. Shaffer said the
FONSI was published in the
Federal Register on June 24.
The Culbertson Generation
Station is scheduled to be opera-
tional in 2010.
