Visitation was held from 15 p.m. and 6-7:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 7, at the Chapel of the Silvemale-Silha Funeral Home in Beach. Following the visitation, a Masonic Rite Ceremony was held at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapel of the Silvemale-Silha Funeral Home in Beach. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 8. at First Lutheran Church in Beach with the Rev. J.T. Burk officiating. Interment will be held at a later date. Geraldine was born on February 20, 1927 in Beach, the daughter of Ferdinand and Edith (Schallock) Schmeling. She was raised ten miles east of Golva where she attended rural schools until the ninth grade, when she then attended Beach High School. Geraldine mar- ried Gregory Maus on April 3.1948 in Glendive. Montana. Geraldine worked at the post office in Golva. Beach and Medora, North Dakota for many years. She painted and refinished furniture. cleaned houses for women in the area. milked cows and was an accomplished carpenter. She cooked at the Golden Valley Manor. in Beach, for several years. Geraldine worked with her children. first at Beach Bakery in the 1970's and later at Prairie Lumber in Golva. She was a hard worker and talented woman. Geraldine was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Lutheran Women's Missionary League, the Altar Guild and the Happy Valley Homemakers Club. Geraldine loved watching bas- ketball, especially when her grand- children were playing. She enjoyed going to Deadwood on the bus and meeting new people. Geraldine dis- played her talents in the many pic- tures she painted. Geraldine was preceded in death by her husband. Gregory Maus: her parents: her brothers. Louis, Volney, John. Delton. Gordon, and Max Schmeling; and a grandson. Leon Maus. Survivors include her son, Gary (Brenda) Maus of Golva: her daugh: ter. Gwenda (Alan) Miller of Beach: her sister. Audrey (Earl) Northrop of Eagle Point. Oregon: her sisters-in- law. Violet. Agnes. Carol. and Esther. Schmeting, and Lorna Maus: brother-in-law. Ross BEACH - Maria Louise (Lang) Ross. 60, of Beach passed away in the comfortable surroundings of her home and family on Friday, July 8. 2011. from complications associat- ed with a malignant brain tumor. Maria was born on December 8. 1950. in Dickinson. North Dakota; the'daughter of Harold and Mary Ethel (Gilman) Lang. She graduat- ed from Beach High School with the class of 1969. After graduation. Maria attended North Dakota State University in Fargo, North Dakota. Maria married her best friend, Gary Ross. on August 4. 1970. Together they had four daughters, Michelle. Laura. Roxanne and Rachel. Anyone who knew Maria knew she took great pride in her family and her work. She worked as a paraprofessional for thirty-one years at Lincoln Elementary School in Beach where she was instrumental m the Accelerated Reading Program, assisted with the Title I Program and she took special inter- est in assisting with technology throughout the school district. Maria was a life-long member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, where she taught religious educaz tion and was active in St. Anne's Guild. Maria was member of the Beach Garden Club. Dollars for Scholars. Odyssey of the Mind. North Dakota Pottery Collector Society, the American Legion Auxiliary and was a Golden Valley County Museum Board member. Maria enjoyed gardening. sewing, quilting, scrap booking,-and vacationing, but nothing compared to her love and devotion for her six grandchildren. Maria is survived by her hus- band, Gary Ross of Beach: her four daughters, Michelle Braun of Sandy, Utah. Laura (Jason) Schmitz of Beach, Roxanne Ross (Tom McGrath) of Coventry, Rhode Island, and Rachel (Brian II) Keohane of Beach; her six grand- children, Ashelvn. Tamaryn, Tiandra. North Dakota State I Fair cancelled i MINOT- The North Dakota State Fair Board decided in an emergency meeting Saturday afternoon to cancel the 2011 North Dakota State Fair due to the continuing Mouse (Souris) River flood situation. Fair and city officials reviewed the revised flood estimates from the National Weather Service which has now forecasted slower than expected receding flood waters of the Mouse River. The new National Weather Service estimates had been made before Friday's significant rain event. severely compounding the city's on- going flood flight. The water has not receded as we expected. "'The situation has changed dra- matically since just two weeks ago when we initially reviewed National Weather Service forecasts," says Renae Korslien. State Fair manager. "'When we were working with the ear- lier forecast, we were certain we could hold a State Fair. But, the revised fore- cast and Friday's downpour now make that an impossibility." "'We did everything we could to make this year's Fair a reality. Sadly, the crcumstances have changed. We are left with no choice," adds Korslien Water remains on the State Fair grounds. However. Korslien reports that the State Fair Center and the new Fair Grandstand remain dry. Fair employees worked around the clock to build protective levies around these facilities in the days before last month's flood. Ticket purchases and camping reservations made by a credit card will be automatically refunded back to the account. It is not necessary to contact the fair office if a credit card was used for the purchase. Those ticket holders can expect to see a credit by July 31st.
