What started as a two-week visit with
grandma turned into six packed weeks of
fishing, fourth of July fireworks, learning
to drive a car, rodeoing, mowing lawns for
money (for fireworks) shooting at Woody
(the unwanted woodpecker), riding in two
parades in two states, and more fishing.
'Course he wanted to stay. He had the life
of Riley. Sleep 'til noon, fish 'til 6 p.m drink
all the pop and eat all the Lay's jalapeno
chips and Ike's and Mike's jelly beans he
wanted without someone ragging on him.
Matt changed my summer. I got all weepy
as he prepared to leave Sunday.
I wept remembering the six-inch long
night crawler I found in the carrots as I was
peeling them. for Friday supper. My screams
only resulted in disgust. "My Gawd, it's only
a worm." Those fishing worms in the refrig-
erator can be a real grey hair grower.
I vept when I got in the white Ford and
smell the funky odor left over from fish for-
by
Sharon Dietz
gotten in the trunk for t2 hours in 90 plus
degree heat. A full day was spent trying to"
scrub a trunk clean and Renewzit to pieces.
Even burying rotten fish doesn't make the
smell go away. Couldn't they have been the
fish that got away?
I wept as I remembered the driving les-
sons that I promised him when he was 18
months old and sitting on my lap trying to
drive the car while waiting for mom in a
parking lot. Now the lanky teen who can
race cars on Nintendo, had to get use to the
width of a car, where the wheels were, not
to put the left foot on the .brake, and NOT
to take the eyes .off the road. He slammed
on the brakes because he thought he might
hit a bird. As I got my head out of the dash,
I assured him birds have a god-given ability
to get out of the way most of the time.
Speaking of birds, my sister's house was
riddled with woodpecker holes, one had the
culprit in it, nesting. Matt's jOb was to make
that woodpecker miserable enough so it
would move.
Mission not accomplished. After six weeks
of near constant harassment, old Woody is
still hole up in the garage.
No amount of stalking, laying in wait,
taping the hole shut or BBs pumped at old
Woody made a difference. Matt let Sunday.
Woody's still in his perch.
I really did cry. I will miss him. He says
he's coming back to try to get catfish from
Beaver Creek. I can always weep again.
