~'~a the summer of 1880 after the N.
p. survey was completed and the track
DAd as far west as Dickinson and it
was a sure thing that this Northern
l~ll~ railroad w~ au amu~ fMt.
people started foUowing up ~ out
for e/tes for bus/hess of all kinds.
Among these newcomers was one
Howe~ Eaton from Pennsylvanl~ as at
tahls time only a few years after the
Custer trail was broke, it was easy
to trace out.
Howard Eaton, looking ahead, located
on a place at the mouth of Davis
creek where the trail following down
this creek from "its somme in the valley
we~ of where Fryburg is now.
Fryburg is on the divide between the
waters going to the Heart river east,
and the waters on the west going to
the Little Mismurt.
It gave birth to an idea that in the
course of a short time ff a tourist
olunp was established and properly
hm3dled it would be a success from art
hlstm-lcal standpoint as this was the
route that General Custer had taken
when he started to round up old Sit-
ring Bull in 18"/6 which he did at the
battlefield on June 25th of that year.
Later Mr. Howard Eaton had his
brothers Alden Willis and Charles join
him and they' built the Custer Trail
ranch, the first dude ranch on the
Northern Pacific and they made a suc-
ce~ of it, but later in about 1905, they
got ready to move and transferred their
equipment to Wyoming as the national
park trade had got well established
there, and the Custer Trail was get-
ting too close in to the outlying small
ranehes and the surrounding prairie
settled up with wheat farmers and soi
his bperatl~-2tci Pastuerized before it goes t~
