This winter's heavy snowfall and dangerous wind chills have created calving conditions that are difficult to manage and put the ears, feet and life of newborn calves at risk. However, calving indoors also has its draw— backs. "When calving indoors, and with a number of animals producing heat and humidity, the temperature changes can produce poor air quality, leading to ef— ficient transmission of potential pathogens and increasing the risk of neonatal calf diarrhea or pneumonia," says Gerald Stokka, NDSU Extension veterinarian and livestock stewardship specialist. Newborn calves have two internal mechanisms to help them cope with cold weather. First, calves are able to shiver, which is the involuntary muscle movements designed to increase warmth by expending energy. The second mechanism is the nonshivering response that allows fat to be used to increase the calves' metabolic rate by two to four times the resting rate to help them cope with colder temperatures. This spe- cial kind of fat is known as brown fat. It is readily available to the newborn to provide energy to cope with the sudden change in the calf's environment at birth. "Calves born to properly fed dams come equipped with this remarkable - Worried about pesticides in your diet? Try mangos, one of the fruits least likely to have pesticide residues. - It can be a snap to remove burned— on food from the bottom of a pot or a frying pan. All you have to do is sprin- kle in some baking soda and add hot water. Let the mixture sit overnight. In the morning, add a dash more baking soda and scrub the residue away. Got dirty floors? Make sure you aren’t throwing good effort into a dirty mop. You need a second buck« et filled with rinse water, then follow this pattem: Clean mop in water with cleaner, mop a section of floor, rinse mop in plain water, go back over that section, rinse mop again. Repeat. - “I like strong tea with no milk. My , husband drinks black coffee. The cof- feemaker and our mugs get stained over time. About monthly, I ‘brew’ a pot of hot water, but I put a dishwasher ‘pac’ in the carafe. The hot water dis— solves the cleaner, making the coffee carafe easy to clean. Then I use the detergent water to clean all the mugs. It works like magic.” —T.L. in Missouri In time for tax season: Don’t over- look the value of opening and con- tributing to an individual retirement account to reduce your tax bill. Con- tributions need not always be made by Dec. 31 to count; it’s possible to open an account as late as tax-filing day on April 15, and it can still count against your 2018 taxes. To check for toilet leaks, add a few drops of food coloring to the toilet tank. If, without flushing, you see the bowl water start to change color, you I know you have a leak. The newborn calfs ability to cope with cold weather means the calf needs to rise quickly after birth and find its food and life source through the dam's colostrum. Colostrum is a form of milk that mammals produce in late pregnancy. It contains energy, protein, fat and vitamins, plus antibodies to protect newborns against disease until their own immune system is totally func- tional. Calving ease and excellent mother- ing ability are critical to the calf‘s abil- ity to stand and nurse quickly. In colder temperatures, calves born with- out some environmental protection or born to poor mothers with poor-qual— ity colostrum will be at greater risk for infection from disease-causing pathogens. "These may be pathogens that cause calf scours or pathogens associ- ated with respiratory disease," Stokka says. "In either case, the pathogens are simply taking advantage of a calf with a compromised immune status." To determine whether a calf has nursed, observe the dam's udder and teats for evidence of nursing and feel the inside of the calf's mouth. A calf with a cold mouth has not nursed and needs attention. Stokka advises that if calving outside this winter, extra bedding is necessary as protection from the wind. However, cows delivering calves usually leave the herd and find secluded locations for giving birth, so producers need to be Billings County Billings County Sheriff’s Office summary report for February: - Traffic: warnings, 6; citations, 12; truck regulatory contacts, 4; pa- pers served, 4; general police calls, 24; motorist assists, 17;‘fire call as- sists, 2; accidents, 8; control burn calls, 5', ambulance call assists, 7; agency assists, animal complaint, 4. These calves may need some type of additional heat source and supple- mentalcolostrum. This may mean the newborns need to spend a few hours in a calf "hot" box or just in a warmer environment that's out of the wind. In some cases of severe hypother— mia, dry heat may not work well enough and a warm-water bath is nec— essary. "However, supplemental heat alone will not be sufficient to warm a calf," Stokka says. "The calf must receive colostrum." The dam's colostrum is optimal. The next best options are frozen stored colostrum or one of a number of com- mercial colostrum substitutes. The commercial colostrum substitutes need to contain a minimum of 100 grams of immunoglobulin (IgG) per packet. lgG is an antibody absorbed through the calf‘s small intestine and provides protection against disease— causing pathogens. Cold stressed, immune—compro- mised calves also may require a little extra care with vaccination proto— cols. In populations of immune-com- promised calves, a significant number of calves may not respond adequately to vaccination proce- dures. Booster doses, which are the second and third doses given within a defined time frame, may be impor- tant this year to prevent respiratory disease during the summer and fall weaning season, Stokka says.
