C-squad shows 'tremendous' improvement
By Kari Bosserman
C-squad Coach
The Lady Bucs C-squad ended
its season on Jan. 19 with a tough
loss to Killdeer. The final score was
45-42.
Trailing by as much as 12 points
in the first half, the Bucs battled
back to within 6 points at half time
with the help of Rachel Rising's 7-
point run in the second quarter.
Trailing the entire third quarter, the
girls were sparked by a pair of 3-
pointers from Kelcee Dykins and
Brooke Davidson to take the lead in
the fourth, but struggling from the
charity stripe, they were unable to
hold onto the lead when the final
buzzer rang.
This wasn't the only barn burner
for this group of girls. Just before
Christmas, they matched up with
the Heart River Cougars in South
Heart for an exciting overtime
match. The Bucs lead by three at
half time, but found themselves
playing catch up again, as they were
outscored 13 to 7 in the third quar-
ter. But the fourth quarter was
Down by five points with 50 sec-
onds left on the clock, they were
able to make a couple of steals off
their full court pressure and capital-
ize on them, sending the game into
overtime with the scoreboard read-
ing 36-36. With the momentum on
their side, the Bucs were led by
Bobbi Nielsen and Kiffin Howard
in the final scoring column and
came away with a 43-40 victory. A
couple of weeks later, the Cougars
traveled to Beach and once again, it
was a close match-up. Down by one
point at the end of the third, the
Bucs outscored the Cougars 12-6 in
the fourth and won with a final
score of 45-40. Kaylene Kreitinger
and LaCee Vollum led the way on
the boards, each pulling down 8.
Bowman took two runs at the
Bucs, but each time, the Buccaneers
proved to be too much for the
Bulldogs. The first match-up, 36-
21, the second, 47-19. Steph Steele
and Brittany Noll combined for 14
of the Bucs points. Hannah Wegner
added a couple of steals, and
Nielsen with 11. LaCee led the
way against the Miners, scoring 16
points and pulling down 7
rebounds.
A couple of matches that proved
tough for the Bucs were against
Trinity (56-30) and Watford City
(61-29). But the girls worked hard,
and take these losses as a learning
experience. After their last game
against Killdeer, our seventh and
eighth graders scrimmaged against
the sixth-grade girls. It was a com-
petitive match up, and the coaches
and the kids really enjoyed it.
The C-squad had a nice season
and showed tremendous improve-
ment. Some final stats for the sea-
son: Bobbie Nielsen led in
rebounds, averaging 7.3 per game,
and LaCee Vollum averaged 6.5 per
game. Bobbie also led in steals,
averaging 3.7 per game and LaCee
had 2.9 per game. Brooke Davidson
averaged 2.3 assists per game fol-
lowed by LaCee Vollum with 2 per
game.

BOWMAN - The Beach boys
basketball team qualified for the
Region 7 tournament with a 51-50
victory over Heart River last monday.
Senior Nate Zachmann hit a field
goal with four seconds to play to win
the game.
"We played inconsistent at times
but the young men played hard
enough to allow us to play another
day and another tournament," said
Head Coach Larry Helvik.
"Anything can happen and if we can
play four quarters of basketball we
can play with most teams at the
regional tournament."
Jake Tescher led the Bucs with 16
points. Derek Weinreis chipped in
with 12 and Nolan Niece finished
with 10.
While the win was exciting for
Beach, it was a heart breaker for
Heart River.
The loss ended their season one
win short of the Region tournament.
James Duletski led the Cougars
with 19 points. Devon Schmelling
finished with 10.
The Beach boys wasted no time
and jumped off to an early 10-0 lead
to begin their first round District 13
win over the Scranton Miners. It
wasn't until 2:25 remaining in the
first quarter when Scranton finally
got on the scoreboard.
Beach coach Larry Helvik stated
before the game that it was important
to get off to a good first quarter start,
and the team did not let their coach
down, outscoring their sixth-seeded
opponent 17-6.
The third-seeded Bucs were
led by senior Nate Zachmann in
the early surge and throughout the
game. The center aggressively
hauled down 15 rebounds and
scored the game high of 17
points. Defensive ace Derek
Weinreis matched Scranton's
leading rebounder with eight
rebounds. Derek was also the
game's second-leading scorer,
netting 15.
It was definitely a team effort with
.Justin Maus scoring 14, and Jake
'Tescher adding 10. Nolan Niece had
a good night nearly getting into dou-
ble figures with nine. All five starters
combined for 65 of the 69 points
scored for the Buccaneers. Others
getting into the scoring column were
Tanner Tescher and Jordan Tescher,
each scoring two points.
Scranton, trying to make a come-
back early in the third quarter, netted
three three-pointers, outscoring the
Bucs 16-12. The Bucs saw to it that
they were going to finish strong as
they outscored their opponents 22-8
in the final stanza, dropping the
Miners into the loser's bracket. The
Bucs were never behind during the
entire contest and looked sharp dur-
ing most of the game.

The Beach boys flip-flopped in
just 24 hours from a fast start on
Friday night against the Miners to an
engine that just couldn't get going on
Saturday night.
It was the hardest half the Bucs
put in all year, scoring just nine
points in the entire first half.
Hettinger wasn't exactly on fire but
scored 21 first-half points.
Fans waiting and cheering for
their team to get going never got their
wish. The harder they tried the worse
that it got for the Bucs. Coach Larry
Helvik tried every combination to get
something going for his team, but
nothing seemed to work. Frustration
set in with Derek Weinreis and
Nathan Zachmann both getting into
foul trouble. Derek finally fouled out
and could only ~vatch from the
bench.
Justin Maus was the only double-
figured scorer with 12 points. Justin
also added five rebounds and three
assists to his totals.
As the game went on, it was very
evident the Hettinger Black Devils
were going to move on to the cham-
pionship game against Bowman
County, a team that they have defeat-
ed twice during the year. Bowman
County defeated number-one seed
Mott/Regent in a close game prior*to
the Buccaneer/Hettinger semi-finals
game.
For the Bucs the challenge will be
to rebound from its semi-final loss
when they meet the Heart River
Cougars from Belfield and South
Heart. Beach won their earlier con-
test with the Cougars, but it is tourna-
ment time, and the winner advances
to the Region VII tournament held at
the Knights of Columbus Activity
Center in. Dickinson.

The junior varsity had a good
season this year, ending up with a
10-win, 4-loss season.
One of those losses came from a
Plevna varsity squad. The rebound-
ing and turnovers were two stats
that these girls controlled almost
every game. All four losses came
on games in which we had low
shooting percentages.
I have to give the girls a lot of
credit for developing the team
chemistry that they did throughout
the season since there were a total

DICKINSON The Lady
Buccaneers were to make a trip to
this year's Region VII basketball
tournament after defeating the
Mott/Regent Wildfire 62-41.
It wasn't all that easy in the
opening quarter as Mott/Regent
took off with an early 8-2 lead. The
Landis twins connected on four 3-
pointers, two apiece, during the
quarter to let everyone know that
the two senior guards were going to
let the ball fly. Beach quickly fired
back with a balanced attack to even-
tually take the lead, 16-15, after the
first quarter. The attack was lead by
Kayla Dolyniuk and Emily Hardy,
each scoring two field goals.
Sparking the outside attack were
Teal Waldal and Abby Weinreis,
both dropping a long-range three-
pointer before the end of the quar-
ter.
The second quarter was played
pretty even with Emily Hardy
continuing to do what she does
best - coming up with steals and
driving for lay-ups. She wasn't
the only Lady Buc who made the
difference, as Jill Rising demon-
girls on the C-squad, we would
bring a couple up to play in the next
game for their good efforts. There
was a different grouping on most
games.

the three-point arch in the first

The half ended with Beach hold-
ing a 31-28 lead.
Mott was shooting well, but it
couldn't buy a bucket in the sec-
ond half, shooting just 4 of 31
from the field. Beadh sealed a
spot in the Region VII tournament
outscoring their opponent 13-1 in
the third quarter while playing
tough defense and holding the
Wildfire to only one free throw.
It was in the second half that the
"Running Buccaneers" settled in
to play the style that they like and
never looked back as they lead
Mott/Regent 44-29 at the end of
the third quarter.
Early in the fourth quarter Kim
and Heather Landis each found the
range from far out near the NBA
circles, but they were no match for
the BHS 18-point fourth quarter.

would try to foul to get ball posses-
