Bucs continue with more wins
Golva News By Shirley Schulte
This Thursday night parents of
our seniors will be recognized
before the tip-off of the Heart River
game at Beach High School.
Five years ago these same par-
ents were invited to the opening of
the basketball season meeting. The
discussion at the end of the meeting
was to immediately move up our
eighth graders to play high school
basketball. This meant skipping
their junior high basketball season.
It was explained that they would be
better challenged and improve at a
much faster rate, comparing a
young third-grade math student
who isn't challenged. That student
will be better challenged and grow
doing upper levels of work to meet
their potential. We do these things
with our academics and music so it
only makes sense if they are not
over-challenged to do the same in
athletics.
Those eighth graders are now
seniors and will be recognized with
their parents at the center-circle of
the floor prior to the Heart River
basketball game. There have been a
lot of sacrifices along the way by
both the players and their parents.
It is never an easy road being a
good parent, but our parents of
these girls who will be recognized
are very special and very supportive
in our young ladies' lives.
After the game with Heart River
there will be tacos served at the
school commons area. Parents and
fans are invited. A few words from
our Athletic Director Brandt
Gaugler, coaches, players and senior
managers will conclude the evening.
This Saturday night, the
Running Bucs will be heading east
to face the Dickinson Trinity Titans
at the Knights of Columbus Activity
Center. The Titans are at the top of
their district and will be major con-
tenders in Region VII. There will
be three games on Saturday (ABC).
The "C" game will begin the
evening of basketball at 4 p.m.
Beach defeats Ray, 130-17
Last Saturday, Jan. 29, the Lady
Bucs came in early for a shoot-
around going thru some shooting
drills to get fine-tuned for their
game against Ray.
The Bucs began with their tradi-
tional diamond-one zone press for
the first 5 minutes then sunk back
into a half-court man defense for
the rest of the game. From the very
beginning to the end of the game,
the Bues were hitting on all cylin-
ders, scoring from just about every-
where on the floor. Five people
scored in double figures with
Brittney Dietz paving the way with
33 for the home team.
Scores per quarter: Ray 5, 10,
11, 17; Beach 38, 72, 104, 130.
Beach scorers: Brittney Dietz,
33; Abby Weinreis, 19; Jill Rising,

Saturday night was good and
bad. Our girls played extremely
well against a very unevenly
matched Ray team. Two of their
starters and leading scorers were
unable to play because of injuries
sustained in other games.
Our girls hit shots from every
spot on the floor and the kids that
came off the bench played also at a
very high level. That was the good,
but the bad part was the lop-sided
score. I think that the state needs to
implement a "mercy rule" like that
of Montana. When the margin of
point-spread exceeds 40 points, the
clock is left running to speed up the
game's ending. Watching scores all
over the state on a nightly basis,
there are many scores that are so
lop-sided. This is especially true in
Class B girls with school enroll-
ments dipping to all time lows.
There has been a lot of talk about
this "mercy rule," and I hope that
the committee moves forward to
implement it.
Beach defeats Scranton, 72-32
On Jan. 27, the Running Bucs
headed south to play a very young
Scranton Miner team and defeated
the Miners 72-32 for their second
District 13 game of the year.
Again, it was a very balanced
attack with three people in double
figures (Abby Weinreis, 15;
Brittney Dietz, 14; and Jill Rising,
14) leading the way. Right behind
them was LaCee Vollum, Kelcee
Dykins and Brooke Davidson, each
with eight points.
Opening up the'game,
Scranton's coach, Kelly Pierce,
tried a different type of defense
using a triangle and one defense
with hopes of causing confusion
and slowing down the Bucs. With
that defense they put chasers on
both Abby Weinreis and Brittney
Dietz in hopes of taking away the
Buccaneer's one-two punch. The
philosophy sounded good, but
Beach has more than a one-two
punch in its arsenal. Jill Rising and
LaCee Vollum went to work down
in the post area and shreaded what
was left over in the Miners' defense.
Scores per quarter: Beach 16, 33,
58, 72; Scranton, 6, 17, 21,32.
Beach scorers: Abby Weinreis,
15; Brittney Dietz, 14; Jill Rising,
14; Brooke Davidson, 8; Kelcee
Dykins, 8; LaCee Vollum, 8; Bailey
Waldal, 2; Cyndi Stedman, 2; Bobbi
Jo Nielsen, 1.

Nelson finds hard hat useful
Safety equipment, recently pur-
chased by the Beach Volunteer Fire
Department has already proven to
be a wise purchase.
The first time the equipment
was used was at the recent Sartz
fire, and volunteer fireman Ray
Nelson, wearing one of the fire hel-
mets or "hard hats," undoubtedly
would have suffered some bruises
or injury, had it not been for the
helmet he was wearing.
A pane of glass from a second
floor window shattered on
Nelson's head, when it fell out of
its window casing. Another inci-
dent also occurred at the same fire
to the same fireman when a chunk
of plaster about three feet in diam-
eter fell on Nelson and jarred him
quite a bit, but he was otherwise
unharmed, thanks to his helmet.
Nelson stated that the plaster hit
him so hard that he is a couple of
inches shorter.

in Wibaux, Mont., caused an explo-
sion last Friday afternoon, at about
4:15 p.m., and did extensive dam-
age to several units, but no one was
injured.
The owners of the motel discov-
ered the leak, as they could smell
gas, and had sent a call in to MDU
at Beach for workmen to repair the
line, and they had just arrived there
the moment the explosion
occurred.
Two units in the newer section
of the motel, which had been added
on six years ago, were destroyed,
and two other units suffered lesser
damage.
The force of the blast also dam-
aged wiring at the nearby B and C

owned by Burton Carey.

Marie Nistler called to say they
are keeping busy and enjoying the
warm and sunny weather of
Arizona. They miss everyone in
North Dakota, but not the cold,
snow and icy roads. Marie and
Don are proud to announce that
they became great-grandparents
twice in the last month. On
Christmas Day, Cade Mathew was
born to Josh and Amanda (Maus)
Heinemeyer, making Don and
Patsy Maus grandparents, and Don
and Marie great-grandparents for
the first time. On Jan. 7, Noella
Grace was born to Emanuel and
Brenna Chasee. She is the first
grandchild of Tom and Eileen
Nistler of Upton, Wyo., and Don
and Marie Nistler's second great-
grandchild. Grandma Patsy Maus
drove to Worland, Wyo., to meet
her new grandson Cade, and visit
Amanda and Josh.
Rick, Elaine and Brittany Noll
spent last weekend in Bismarck for
medical appointments and attend-
ed a funeral for a long-time friend
of Elaine's. They returned on
Sunday reporting bad road condi-
tions. Mary and Ron Barthel
joined them in Bismarck on
Saturday. They all attended a
Wizards basketball game on
Saturday. The Barthels returned
home on Monday.
Paul and Wienie Barthel came
to Golva to visit their daughter,
Elaine Noll, on Tuesday.
Delbert and Jean Schulte went
to Devils Lake to meet their
newest grandchild, Elizabeth
Nicole. She was born to their
daughter Kimberly and Mike
Hurley on Jan. 21. She joins a 2-
year-old sister, Maddie. About 6
months ago, Mike and Kimberly

cent since 2008. Kreil said there is
little doubt pronghorn are in a vul-
nerable state due to deep snow, and
in some cases have limited move-
ment because herds are prevented
from moving to areas with less
snow.
While this winter so far has been
tough on wildlife, Kreil said the
next several weeks are critical.
"Animals have been stressed for a
couple months now, and they don't
have the energy they had in early
winter," Kreil said. "A mild
February and March is much need-
ed, and if we get a break we will see
the benefits next fall. If not, then
hunters will need to adjust their
expectations in 2011 ."
Saturday, Don and Rella
Abernethy traveled to Minot to visit
with friends, Ted and Bev Trinka.
Ted had the misfortune of breaking
his leg after a fall on some ice. Don
and Rella remained with the Trinkas
before returning home on Monday.
On their way home, they stopped in
Bismarck and had lunch with their
daughter, LaDonna Fallgatter.
Pete Novotny helped plow out the
driveway at the Jim and Marj
Wyckoff home on Monday.
Sentinel Butte has seen a lot of
truck traffic lately because of the
amount of oil work that has been
going on in the area. The trucks
come into town for water, as well as
using the new tanks situated on the
hill just north of the city.
Jim and Marj Wyckoff drove to
Dickinson on Tuesday to visit with
son and wife, Tom and Lynn
Wyckoff, and daughter Kiitlynn.
