Charles J. Volesky
DICKINSON - Funeral Mass
for Charles J. Volesky, 86. of
Dickinson was held at 10 a.m.,
Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011, at St.
Patrick's Catholic Church with the
Rev. Todd Kreitinger celebrating.
Military Rites were provided by
the Dickinson Hrnor Guard. Burial
was scheduled for 1 p.m., CST
Monday, Jan. 31, at North Dakota
Veterans Cemetery in Mandan.
Visitation for Charles was from
9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday, Jan. 28, at
Stevenson Funeral Home with a
Rosary & Vigil Service being held
at 7 p.m. Charles passed away
Tuesday, Jan. 25, at St. Joseph's
Hospital and Health Center in
Dickinson.
Charles Jerome Volesky was
born Aug. 29, 1924, on the family
farm in Billings County, the son of
Joseph and Mary (Karsky)
Volesky. The family then moved to
a farm north of Dickinson in Dunn
County. Charles attended Sts. Peter
& Paul School in New Hradec and
later graduated from Dickinson
High School.
In June 1943, Charles enlisted
in the United States Army. After
basic training, he was assigned to
the Coast Artillery as a research
light operator in Fort Bliss, Texas,
and went on to receive advanced
training while attached to the
Army Air Corps in Orlando. Fla.
He was then sent to the Pacific
Theatre of Operations in the
Ryukus Islands, on the Islands of
Okinawa and Ie Shima and
remained there until the war ended.
A highlight that he never forgot
was the landing of the ,Japanese
Advance Surrender Team on le
Shima before advancing on to
Manilla to meet Gen. MacArthur.
From le Shima, he was sent to San
Francisco and received an honor-
able discharge in April 1946 at Ft.
Lewis, Wash.
After his military service,
Charles attended Dickinson State
College for a period of two years.
In March 1948, he accepted the
position of field man with the
Billings County PMA. On July 23,
1951, Charles married the love of
his life. Patricia Mary Roth at St.
Bernard's Catholic Church in
Belfield. Together they raised their
four children, Valery, Mark, Vaune
and Jill. Charles later became the
manager of the Billings County
office until his transfer to Farmers
Home Administration in July 1954.
In August 1957, Charles was
appointed as the executive director
of the Stark County ASCS office
until his retirement in 1983. While
employed with the ASCS, Charles
was a charter member and organiz-
er of the State Association of
ASCS County Office Employees,
served as state president for two
years as well as a delegate at
national conventions in Iowa and
Columbus, Ohio.
Charles was a member of the
American Legion, Veterans of
Foreign Wars, Catholic Workman,
the Knights of Columbus and the
Queen City Toastmasters. As a
Toastmaster, he served as president
for one year. His involvement in
the Knights of Columbus included
serving as grand knight and district
deputy as well as being a member
the Knights of Columbus 4th
Degree serving as faithful naviga-
tor.
Following retirement, Charles
and Patricia worked for the Soil
Conservation Service as tree
planters in Stark and Billings
counties, planting over 300 miles
of shelterbelts. Following the
tree-planting season each spring.
he was then employed as a crop
adjuster for the Federal Crop
Insurance Corporation for seven
years until his health failed him.
Charles was an active member
of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in
Dickinson. He served on various
committees and parish councils
including parish trustee. Charles
was also one of the first members
to be appointed as lecturer, reader
and Eucharistic minister.
Charles received various
awards during his lifetime, includ-
ing numerous certificates of merit
from the U. S. Department of
Agriculture, Soil Conservation
Society of America for promotion
and accomplishments in the field
of soil conservation, 1981-1982,
Knights of Columbus Council
1515 Family of the Year, 1996
North Dakota Catholic Family of
the Year 1st Runner Up, 1994
Certificate of Recognition of
Who's Who in North Dakota.
Family was always very impor-
tant to Charles. He was a father
figure to his brothers and sisters.
He also loved and cherished his
children, his grandchildren and
great-grandchildren. Charles had a
very deep, unshakable faith with
his church and God. To his family
he was known as the gadget guy
and couldn't wait to learn how to
run a computer and navigate the
Internet. He enjoyed fishing, espe-
cially at Lake Sakakawea, holding
the state record for walleye for
several years.
His farmer friends and neigh-
bors were also a very important
part of Charles' life, helping therh
out through his work and friend-
ship.
Charles is survived by his wife,
Patricia: son Mark (Vickie)
Volesky of Lake Park, Minn.;
daughters, Valery (Dave)
Campbell of Riverton, Wyo.;
Vaune (Jack) Cripe of Dickinson;
and Jill (Jay) Reddon of Riverton,
Wyo.; six brothers. Joseph (Linda)
Volesky of Rapid City, S.D.;
Edwin (Irene) Volesky of
Dickinson; William (Marcia)
Volesky of Littleton, Colo.; Tony
(Bev) Volesky of Dickinson;
Alfred (Cele) Volesky of Helena,
Mont.; and Francis (Sue) Volesky
of Warrensburg, Mo.; four sisters,
Ella Sadowsky of Dickinson;
Dorothy (Herman) Hauck of
Billings, Mont.; Marion (Ben)
Weigel of Bismarck: and Bridgit
(Tom) Glaser of Dickinson: five
grandchildren, B.J. (Sara) Cripe,
Haylee Cripe, Ryan Campbell,
Meagan Reddon and John Reddon
and two great-grandchildren,
Jaxon and Cooper.
He was preceded in death by
his parents. Joseph and Mary
Volesky; one brother. Robert J.
Volesky; one sister-in-law, Betty
Volesky and two brother-in-laws,
Bob Sadowsky and Ray
Froehlich.

Jerry
BELFIELD - Mass of Christian
Burial for Jerry D. Page, 77, of
Belfield was held at 2 p.m., Friday,
Jan. 28, 2011, at St. Bernard's
Catholic Church, Belfield. Burial
will take place later this spring in
Carrington, N.D.
Visitation for Jerry was held
Thursday, Jan. 27, from 12 p.m. to 8
p.m. at Stevenson Funeral Home,
Dickinson, with a Rosary and Vigil
Service being held at 6 p.m.
Jerry passed away on Tuesday.
Jan. 25, at St. Benedict's Health
Center in Dickinson.
Jerry was born Nov. 21, 1933, in
Carrington, the son of Hosea Page
and Minnie (Minnkle) Page. He
attended school in Carrington.
Jerry took care of the family farm as
well as drove truck for Teddy Clark,
hauling livestock and freight.
On Nov. 25, 1933, he married
Arlene Louise Bata in Kensal,
N.D. They resided in Carrington,
where Jerry worked for a John
Deere dealer. He was later trans-
ferred to Belfield to work for John
Deere until 1968. He then managed
Jerry's Place in Belfield. Jerry also
drove truck for Rock Island and
worked for Stark County and L.E
Anderson, doing road construction.
He also worked for the state of
North Dakota for a number of
years. Jerry retired in 1994.
JerrY enjoyed hunting, playing
cards, reading and spending time

with family and friends.
Jerry is survived by one son,
Gregory (Cindy) of Livingston,
Mont.; two daughters, Grayce
(Dennis) Keeler of Moneta, Wyo.;
and Robin (Jeff) Iverson of
Belfield; five grandchildren, Dana
Page of California; Destiny Page of
Sommerset, Mass.; Lester (Debrah)
Iverson of Belfield; Erick Iverson
of Belfield; and Danielle Iverson of
Belfield; and two sisters. Fawn
Kautzman and Blanche Peters, both
of Carrington.
He was preceded in death by his
wife, Arlene; one daughter Renee:
his parents, Hosea and Minnie
Page; three brothers and two sisters.

Florence Elnore Vinquist
BEACH Florence Elnore
Vinquist, 84, of Bismarck, formerly
of Beach, passed away Monday,
Jan. 24, 2011, at Baptist Homes in
Bismarck.
Funeral services were held
Friday, Jan. 28, at 11 a.m. at the
First Lutheran Church in Beach,
with Pastor J.T. Burk officiating.
Interment followed at Beach
Lutheran Cemetery. Silvernale-
Silha Funeral Home of Beach was
entrusted with arrangements.
Florence Elnore Stedman was
born, March 22, 1926, in Beach to
Norman and Georgia (Adams)
Stedman. Florence was:raised in
Beach and received her education in
the Beach Public Schools, graduat-
ing with the class of 1944.
On Feb. 5, 1946, she was united
in marriage to Howard Vinguist in
Billings, Mont. After, their mar-
riage they lived on a farm 25 miles
north of Beach until 1965 when
they moved into Beach. She
resided there until May 2000, when
she moved to Mandan, to be near
her daughter. In November 2004,
she moved into Edgewood Vista
Assisted Living Place in Bismarck.
She eventually moved into the
Baptist Home in Bismarck, where
she lived until the time of her death.
Florence was a member of the
First Lutheran Church of Beach
and the Church Circle as well as the
Homemakers Club. She enjoyed
embroidering, sewing, gardening
and her houseplants. Florence
loved being around her family and
dogs. She was a very happy per-

Florence was preceded in death
by her husband Howard Vinquist, as
well as five brothers, Vernon,
Edmond, Dale, Charles and Gerald
Stedman.
She is survived by her daughter,
LaVonne (Donald) Haider of
Mandan; a son, Darrel Vinquist of
Independence, Mo.; and two grand-
children, Curtis Haider and Mindy
(Trent) Guthmiller; two great-
granddaugh'ters, Jordan and Taylor
Guthmiller; three brothers, Larry
Stedman and David Stedman, of
Wibaux, Mont.; and Sidney
Stedman of Glendive, Mont.; two
sisters, Dora Luella Wilson of
Dickinson; and Rosalie Twardoski
of Beach: as well as numerous
nieces and nephews.

Steven M. Kessel
BELFIELD - Steven M. Kessel,
71, Belfield, died Saturday, Jan. 22,
2011, at St. Alexius Medical Center,
Bismarck. Steve's Mass of Christian
Burial was at 10 a.m., Friday, Jan.
28, at St. Bernard's Catholic Church,
Belfield with the Rev. Shannon
Lucht as the celebrant and assisted
by Deacon AI Schwindt.
Visitation was on Thursday from
8 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Ladbury Funeral
Service, Dickinson, and continued at
the church t'rom 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.,
with a rosary and vigil at 7 p.m.
Visitation continued on Friday one
hour prior to services at the church.
Steven was born Feb. 18, 1939, in
Dickinson, to Frank and Mathilda
(Hutzenbiler) Kessel. Steven was
raised in Belfield while attending
Belfield Public School.
In 1961, Steven met his future
wife Elaine Babeck, and they were
married on Oct. 23, 1962. During
their 48 years of marriage they were
blessed with three wonderful chil-
dren, Craig, Stacie, and Kristina.
Steven spent most of his career
working in the oilfield for 30 years.
He held various positions including
seismography, operating heavy
equipment, and most recently at L. P.
Anderson for many years bidding and
overseeing the development of oil site
kycations. Outside of work, Steven
also held positions in the community
serving on the St. Bernard's School
Board, Belfield City Council and vol-
unteering as an ambulance driver for
the city of Belfield.
Steven fully enjoyed spending
time with his family and grandchil-
dren. He enjoyed his morning coffee
with friends, listening to polka
music, and playing cards. His quick
wit, laughter, and love of visiting
with people made a lasting impres-
sion for everyone he met throughout
the years. In his later years, it was
rare for a day to pass where Steven
missed "Gunsmoke," and many
episodes on HGTV, his favorite
channel. Even though he suffered
for many years with illness, he had
the patience and perseverance to stay
strong and never lose hope. His
energy and tender spirit was inspir-
ing to all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife Elaine,
Belfield; three children, Craig
(Anna) Kessel, Federal Way, Wash.;
Stacie (Gregg) Fremont, Maple
Valley, Wash.; and Kristina, Seattle,
Wash.; six grandchildren, Sarah,
Matthew, Michael, Hannah and
Amara Kessel and Noah Fremont;
seven siblings, Paul (Mildred)
Kessel, Pat (Shirley) Kessel, Dave
Kessel, Albert (Anita) Kessel, Ann
Staley, Leo (Patti) Kessel. and Betty
(Dennis) Foy. He was preceeded in
death by his parents, Frank and
Mathilda, and his best friend, Ed
Kordonowy.
In lieu of flowers, the family has
established the Steven M. Kessel
Benefit Memorial Fund, c/o Elaine
Kessel, set up at Wells Faro Bank.
Mardelle Bernice Payseno.
SANGER, Calif. - Mardelle
Bernice Payseno, 75, a resident of
Sanger, Calif., formerly of Beach,
passed away on Friday, Dec. 31,
2010.
Mardelle was born to William
and Bernice (Otremba) Szudera on
Sept. 24, 1935. She was raised on
the family farm and received her
education in Beach. Mardelle was a
homemaker, and was retired from
being a registered nurse at St.
Alexius Hospital in Bismarck for
nine years.
Mardelle is survived by her hus-
band, Jim Payseno of Sanger,
Calif.; sons Tom A. Payseno of
Reedley, Calif.; and Michael J.
Payseno of Clovis, Calif.; daughters
Diane Emmersen of Mesa, Ariz.;
and Lauri Enyart of Atlanta, Ga.;
brothers William Szudera of Havre,
Mont.; Loren Szudera and Steven
Szudera, both of Beach; sisters,
Kathleen Nelson of Spearfish. S.D.;
and Janice Sattler of Columbus,
Mont.; eightgrandchildren and four
great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held with recita-
tion of the Holy Rosary at Wallin's
Sanger Funeral Home on Tuesday,
Jan. 4. A funeral Mass was celebrat-
ed at St. Mary's Catholic Church on
Jan. 5, with burial following in
Sanger.
